Organic farming combines the best of traditional methods with up to date science and ecology; working with nature, not against it. Organic farmers rely on a healthy natural ecosystem to provide biological control of pests, they use rotations to maintain a healthy soil, and use mixed hedgerows for stock control. They not only protect the environment by avoiding synthetic fertilisers and sprays, but also: • Conserve hedgerows, wetlands and ancient meadows. Highfield Farm currently has nearly 40 acres of its 118 acre total in the "Countryside Stewardship Scheme". During 1997 this scheme helped us create a nature trail on the farm, and to lay over 500 metres of hedgerow. • Encourage biodiversity. By not using pesticides or herbicides our farm has become a five star hotel for rare wildlife. Recent sightings have included Cirl Buntings and even a Red Kite !
